Avonbourne’s International Mini Company

Mission Statement:

To create inspirational, creative and informative learning opportunities to raise cultural and international awareness.

Who are we?

We are a group of Avonbourne students who have set up an International mini company. Our role in the school is to support and encourage international partnerships, projects and to raise cultural awareness.

Avonbourne have already twinned with Macassa School, near Cape Town in South Africa, and Kingdom Schools in Saudi Arabia.

Footprints of South Africa

Our international mini company has been closely involved with Footprints of South Africa, which is a six month collaborative arts project, involving 14 different schools in the Poole and Bournemouth area. It will culminate in a high profile public performance at Poole lighthouse on 28th June 2008. The project has worked with a variety of local and South African professional artists to create inspirational and cultural learning opportunities and performance pieces in Dance, Music and Visual art.

This project aims to build upon links with schools in South Africa, whilst showcasing some of the vibrant cultures and history of South Africa. It also celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday which provides an added incentive for the project. The proceeds will go towards supporting and developing education within the deprived areas of South Africa.

Our aims

We are also planning more fundraising initiatives and events to deepen knowledge and raise awareness within our school. We would like to strengthen our communication with our link schools and hope to seek sponsorship to enable students to visit between schools.

As a company we have decided that one of our first aims is to raise enough money to buy a mini bus for Macassa School, to help with the travel to school, as some students have to walk miles a day to get to school, and to widen the opportunities within the rural school.
